Treatment with Ritalin<sup>\u00ae<\/sup>\u00a0in childhood predisposes takers to cocaine\u2019s reinforcing effects.<\/li>\n<li class=\"body\">In humans, chronic administration of Ritalin<sup>\u00ae<\/sup>\u00a0produced tolerance and showed cross-tolerance with cocaine and amphetamines.<\/li>\n<li class=\"body\">Ritalin<sup>\u00ae<\/sup>\u00a0is chosen over cocaine in self-administered preference studies in non-human primates.<\/li>\n<li class=\"body\">Ritalin<sup>\u00ae<\/sup>\u00a0produces behavioral, physiological and reinforcing effects similar to amphetamines.<\/li>\n<li class=\"body\">Ritalin<sup>\u00ae<\/sup>\u00a0substitutes for cocaine and amphetamines in scientific studies.<\/li>\n<li class=\"body\">Children medicated with Ritalin<sup>\u00ae<\/sup>\u00a0who tried cocaine reported higher levels of drug dependence than those who had not used Ritalin<sup>\u00ae<\/sup>.<\/li>\n<li class=\"body\">Ritalin<sup>\u00ae<\/sup>\u00a0abuse is neither benign or rare in occurrence and is accurately described as producing severe dependence.<\/li>\n<li class=\"body\">Sweden removed Ritalin<sup>\u00ae<\/sup>\u00a0from its market in 1968 because of widespread abuse.<\/li>\n<li class=\"body\">More high school seniors were abusing Ritalin<sup>\u00ae<\/sup>\u00a0than those taking it medically prescribed.<\/li>\n<li class=\"body\">Side-effects of Ritalin<sup>\u00ae<\/sup>:<br \/>\nincreased blood pressure, heart rate, respirations and temperature; appetite suppression, weight loss, growth retardation; facial tics, muscle twitching, central nervous system stimulation, euphoria, nervousness, irritability and agitation, psychotic episodes, violent behavior, paranoid delusions, hallucinations, bizarre behaviors, heart arrhythmia, palpitations and high blood pressure; tolerance and psychological dependence and death<\/li>\n<li class=\"body\">Ritalin<sup>\u00ae<\/sup>\u00a0will affect normal children and adults the same as those with attention and behavior problems. Effectiveness of Ritalin is not diagnostic.<\/li>\n<li class=\"body\">CHADD, [a] non-profit organization which promotes the use of Ritalin<sup>\u00ae<\/sup>, also receives a great deal of money from the [drug\u2019s manufacturer]. CHADD does not inform its members of the abuse problems of Ritalin<sup>\u00ae<\/sup>, [portraying] the drug as a benign, mild stimulant that is not associated with abuse [or] serious side-effects.
